Wooden Boat Course

Hoisting sails on the 2005 Wooden Boat Course

For a number of years now we have been doing sail training cruises with young people. We are excited by the learning process we see during these cruises. For a while we have wondered about how to offer this same theme to our regular guests. This year, in collaboration with the Wooden Boat School, we are offering an experiential approach to learning sailing and seamanship aboard a large sailing vessel. During this course you will become an active member of the crew of the Mary Day. The course will include learning liveaboard skills, general seamanship, coastal navigation and marlinspike seamanship. This is a hands-on and physically active course. There will be a watch system set-up with responsibilities to manage all aspects of running a vessel of this size. The goal for the end of the week is to have the students working together to assume the operation of the vessel. Veteran Wooden Boat instructor Jane Ahlfeld will join with the crew of the Mary Day to be your instructors for this course. They have organized Watch stations which will include: Navigation, Bow, Marlinspike Skills, and Galley to guide you through the workings of the vessel and teach you the skills required to run the ship. There will also be plenty of time to relax and get ashore as usual. Though this course is being offered as a part of the Wooden Boat School all reservations should be made through the schooner office.

This all-inclusive 6-day sailing adventure boards July 25 in Camden. Cost $1050/person. Reservations can be made through the Mary Day office, 800-992-2218.
